JOSHUA AGBOR PRAISE KROON

Artist & Researcher, Cameroon.

Bio / About Me Artist Statement & Research Focus

I am a Cameroonian multidisciplinary artist and cultural innovator, working at the critical intersection of indigenous knowledge, artificial intelligence, and ethics. My practice is dedicated to developing ethical frameworks for technology that center non-Western perspectives and community governance. Through projects like the Běbìi Engine and the FRED Movement, I create models that ensure cultural preservation translates into economic equity and fair collaboration, offering a vital perspective on global conversations about AI ethics, governance, and the future of cultural heritage.

Projects / Work Featured Project: The Běbìi Engine

The Běbìi Engine: An Ethical AI-Powered Cultural Instrument (Lead Artist & Researcher, 2025–Present)This project develops a performative AI instrument inspired by the conversational logic of the Baka one-note flute. It pioneers a framework for ethical AI development, governed by a signed Community Co-Creation Charter with Baka elders that ensures informed consent, community data sovereignty, and equitable benefit-sharing. Funded by the Wits AI & African Music Project, it serves as a concrete model for addressing bias and extraction in technology, positioning community-led dialogue as central to AI ethics.
